Listening to this monologue is like my brain talking to myself most times these days.
We've been sucked in and now we're being slowly sucked under... one day at a time, one marketing ad at a time, one newscast at a time, one trip to Wal-mart at a time, one trip to the gas pump at a time, one "you're either with me or against me" bullshit at a time, one credit card at a time, one "soccer practice" at a time, one cell phone/text messaging addiction at a time, one" I'm too busy running around" to notice anything's wrong at a time, one overly huge house at a time, one "granite counter top" at a time, one "stainless steel appliances" at a time -- one marketed strategy at a time. . .
The problem- What Carlin is talking about is so big and so obvious, yet at the same time it's somehow so subliminal that most people don't notice. That's the scary part. Most people are living an oblivious life style. There's just enough consumerist "success" in there pathetic lives that they don't notice the big picture. . . AND because they are supposedly "successful" and "living right" because they have all of the "things" they want, they don't really give a damn about anybody else!
I retired from the Air Force in 1981 after having served for 20 years. The first four years of active duty I served as a Security Policeman, the next 16 years I was an Air Traffic controller. After retirement I worked for a contractor as an Air Traffic Control Subject Matter Expert. In 1985 I again joined the government, this time as a civilian. I retired on the 31st of Dec 2005 after over twenty years in civil service. I am now fully retired. I will be the first to admit that I supported Reagan. I think it was during that administration that I first questioned my political leanings. I will further admit that I use to watch Fox News, that changed when it became apparent that they were a mouthpiece for the right wing neocons. During the Afghanistan war Fox used to use Ret Col. Hackworth as its military expert. During the build-up for the illegal war against Iraq, Col. Hackworth denounced the unprovoked attack on a soverign nation. That was the last time you saw Col. Hackworth. That made it plain to me that Fox would not put up with guests that had different opinions than what they espoused.
